Stopping the spread of infections

Catch it, bin it, kill it

The easily remembered slogan "catch it, bin it, kill it" reminds us all how we can help to stop the spread of colds, flu and more recently COVID 19 by practising good respiratory and hand hygiene when we cough and sneeze.

Coughing spreads droplets as far as 6 metres and sneezing as much as 8 metres. These droplets stay suspended in the air for up to 10 minutes.

Catch it

Germs spread easily. Use tissues to cover and catch your cough or sneeze. You can use your sleeve or crook of your elbow if you don’t have a tissue.

Bin it

As germs can live for several hours on tissues throw them in a bin as soon as possible.

Kill it

Hands can transfer germs to every surface you touch. Clean your hands as soon as you can and before touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
