Vaccinations

MMR vaccine

The MMR vaccine is a safe and effective way to protect yourself and your children from measles, mumps and rubella.

Measles is a highly infectious disease that spreads easily among those who are not vaccinated. Especially in nurseries and schools.

It can lead to common complications such as ear infections. More serious complications include pneumonia and encephalitis, which is swelling of the brain. In rare cases, measles can be fatal.

Mumps and rubella also pose health risks.

Common symptoms

Measles symptoms include fever, cough, and a distinctive rash.

Mumps can cause swelling of the salivary glands.

Rubella symptoms include a spotty rash and can cause flu-like symptoms.

Vaccine dosages

You need to have two doses of the MMR vaccine to be fully protected and help to stop the spread of these diseases.

If you or your child needs to catch up on missed doses, you can do so at any age.

How to check whether you or your child have had both doses

To check your child's immunisation status, you can:

  • check your child's Red Book
  • check the NHS app
  • contact the Child Health Information team for your child's immunisation status by:

To check your immunisation status as an adult, you can:

  • ask your parents
  • check the NHS app
  • check your Red Book, if you have one

If you are still unsure, ask your GP practice about your vaccination history.

If necessary, you can arrange a vaccination free of charge with your GP practice.

See the full list of Greater Manchester pharmacies offering the MMR vaccine.

Anyone aged 16 and over who has missed their MMR vaccinations can walk into any participating pharmacies to get their vaccination from a highly-trained pharmacist.
